EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION

If you have has sex without using contraception, or think your contraception might have failed, you can use emergency contraception.

THIS IS FREE

If you act quickly, emergency contraception can usually prevent pregnancy.

You can get emergency contraception from:

  • any GP who provides contraceptive services
  • any family planning clinic
  • any young persons clinic
  • most sexual health clinics
  • Some hospital accident and emergency departments.

You take two special sets of pills. Take the first set within 3 days (72 hours) of having unprotected sex. You then take the second set exactly 12 hours later.

The pills may stop an egg being released (ovulation). Or they may stop a fertilised egg settling in your womb (implanting).
