Yoghurt The Natural Cure? |
|
Can yoghurt help in vaginal infections? Yoghurt has been expoused both as a traditional remedy and, more recently, by mainstream medical personnel as additive therapy for thrush and bacterial vaginosis. Vaginosis is found in between 10 and 30 percent of the female population, with perhaps half not showing any sign of the infection.
The EvidenceA number of studies1 2 3 4 5 6 have looked at a variety of problems and treatments involving both yoghurt and Lactobacillus Acidophilus in freeze-dried form. They looked both at the effects on treating symptomatic infections and also prevention of recurrence. |
ConclusionAs usual, the results were far from definitive. Many showed little or no statistically different outcomes between trial and control subject. However, one study showed a 21% recurrence with Lactobacillus compared with 47% with placebo.Side-effects were minimal, however, with only five subjects out of nearly 200 reporting ill effects - either mild burning sensation or a messy discharge. In reality, it is difficult to produce a definitive review of the subject as very few studies exist and those that do have very different characteristics. |
