The Truth about the Pill |
|
Every week we are told, don't eat this, don't eat that, this is bad for you etc. In 1995 the media caused mass panic with the suggestion that the combined oral contraceptive pill is potentially dangerous
.
When the Government in October 19995 recommended that women be put on the new combined pill the fear for the pill was fuelled.
Pause for thoughtAn interesting point raised through all this was while hundreds of women flocked to the doctors scared for there health they continued to smoke, the effects of which are well documented and proven and pose a greater health risk than the pill. |
The ScareThe scare was based on two unpublished papers stating that the new third generation pill created a higher risk of venous throboembolism (VTE). Then the papers claimed the second generation progestogens carried a lower risk of VTE.It was a disaster; women came off the pill causing pregnancy and abortion rates to increase dramatically. In fact the reports where confirming what was already known about the risks of VTE and oral contraceptives. April 1999 saw the UK Medical Commission advise that the third generation pill could be prescribed as long as the risks of VTE where explained. |
