Understanding scars

A scar is a mark left after a wound. It is an essential and natural part of the healing process to either the top layer of skin (the epidermis) or the tissue under the skin (the dermis).
Damage to the epidermis is healed by the rebuilding of skin and normally results in only slight scarring. When the dermis is damaged, skin repair is more complicated. To do this the body lays down protein called collagen which occurs naturally within the body and this usually leads to more noticeable scars.
In some cases the scars left by these deeper wounds will not fade but will not fade but will remain red or dark and raised. These are called hypertrophic or keloid scars and can be treated with Cica-Care.
